Years and years ago when Ayia Napa was a small fishing village, a hunter who used to visit the forest of the village with his hunting party, came across a cave and upon entering he found an icon of ''Panaya" (Mary, mother of Christ). On making this discovery, he built a small church on top of the caves.
The cave is still there and to visit is a must. This mediaeval 16th Century monastery, dedicated to 'Our Lady of the forests', stands in the middle of the village surrounded by a high wall. The church is partially underground and cut into the rock. The ancient sycamore tree in front of the south gate is believed to be 600 years old.
Over the years Ayia Napa has grown from a small fishing village into a popular holiday resort with its beautiful beaches, tourist attractions and its crystal blue sea.
